Innovation bootcamp with Scott Gillson, Innovation Consultant

Recently, the team here at Bamboo Crowd were treated to a half-day workshop led by a friend of ours, Innovation Consultant, Scott Gilson. Scott brings a wealth of experience working at the cutting edge of innovation, at places like McKinsey, Market Gravity and Bow and Arrow.

The idea was for Bamboo Crowd to have a day of innovation training, so we could bolster our understanding of what our candidates and clients do, firsthand. Experience, after all, is the best teacher.

Article title

The session kicked off with some background into the different types of processes out there, with Scott illustrating and bringing to life some of the tools and techniques used by consultants and designers to innovate.

We weren’t just about to sit back and look at slides all afternoon though. Scott split us into two teams and gave us some sample insights, which consisted of a customer persona and some top-line market data. We then had to utilise various idea generation techniques to come up with some compelling propositions to develop further.

Fuelled by coffees, pastries and cans of soft drinks from the bottomless Bamboo Fridge, we got to work!

Our main takeaways from the session

1.The more insights you can draw upon, the more creative you can be. Even though we were split up into two teams, working separately, we still ended up with similar propositions. If, like in a client project, we would have done the research ourselves, or at least had more material and time to immerse ourselves in existing research, we may have come up with radically different outputs. Always do your homework.

2. Storytelling is everything. You could come up with the cleverest, most disruptive idea in the world - but if you can’t articulate who it’s for, the problem it solves, and how it works, you won’t be making any dents in the universe. The art of building an emotional journey into your storytelling process is a brilliant technique, with many diverse applications.

3.Innovating is exhausting. By the end of the session, there were discarded coffee cups and coke cans scattered throughout the office and we were pretty much done for the day. Thinking and creating new ideas is mentally taxing, which is why the innovation market exists.

Thanks again to Scott for a brilliant afternoon!
